What is EVUS? The Electronic Visa Update System (EVUS) is a new electronic online visa system. It was designed to increase security and to determine who is eligible to travel to the United States.
Citizens of the People’s republic of China (PRC), who hold a 10-year B1, B2, or a combined B1/B2 US visa, are required to obtain an EVUS travel authorization in addition to their nonimmigrant visa.
Chinese citizens, which includes citizens from Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan with a People's Republic of China passport, need to complete an EVUS online application before traveling to the US. It is a legal requirement.
The American EVUS registration can be completed online at any time though it is recommended that the application is completed at least 72 hours before traveling to avoid any possible delays.
The online application form involves answering a series of basic questions including personal details such as your name, address, and date of birth. You have to submit your passport information and the details of your B1/B2 visa. In addition it is necessary to enter information on your employment history. It is essential to be as accurate as possible when completing the online application, as any incomplete or incorrect information could lead to the application being denied.
To successfully obtain an EVUS travel authorization it is necessary for Chinese citizens to have a 10-year nonimmigrant US visa, either a B1, B2 or combined visa, and a valid passport with at least six months remaining from the date of arrival.
The requirements are the same for children as they are for adults. All Chinese citizens, regardless of age must obtain an EVUS travel authorization before traveling to the US.
Traveling to the US without an EVUS visa could result in travelers being denied entry into the country.
An EVUS registration is valid for a period of two years and allows the holder to enter the US multiple times over that period. However, if someone’s passport expires before the two year period, the EVUS visa will expire at the same time as the passport.
The same applies to the 10-year B1/B2 visa which is attached to the EVUS visa. If it expires, the EVUS needs to be renewed.
Renewing the US visa online is a simple process that should not take longer than 20 minutes, though some applications do take longer on rare occasions.
