Visa B1/B2: Applying for EVUS with the Foil Number

When you enroll with EVUS (Electronic Visa Update System) you need to enter a range of information including details from your B1/B2 visa and your passport. This includes the foil number from your B1/B2 visa.

EVUS is a new online visa system that citizens of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) have to enroll with, in addition to having a 10-year B1/B2 visa, before traveling to the United States.

It was introduced to strengthen the U.S. border as an additional security measure. The EVUS registration is completed online and involves entering a range of information.

B1/B2 visa

People travel to the U.S. for many different reasons and there are various types of visas designed for different purposes. The most common types of non-immigrant visas are B1, B2, and B1/B2 visas.

B1 visas are for business purposes, B2 visas are for leisure, tourism, or medical treatment. B1/B2 combination visas are designed for when there are mixed reasons for entering the U.S.

To apply for a B1/B2 visa travelers should contact their nearest U.S. embassy. The paperwork is fairly straightforward though the process normally involves a face-to-face interview. It is necessary to obtain a B1/B2 visa before completing the EVUS form.

What is a B1/B2 visa foil number?

The B1/B2 visa foil number is the red number that appears below the expiration date of the B1/B2 visa. When applying for EVUS it is necessary to have a B1/B2 visa and to enter the foil number on the application.

To complete the application it is also necessary to enter the following information:

  • Your name as it appears on your passport without the salutation (Mr/Mrs/Dr etc).
  • Date of birth (DD/MM/YYYY).
  • Passport number (which must match the details on your B1/B2 visa).
  • B1/B2 issue and expiry dates.
  • Point of contact in the U.S.
  • Employment details.

Submitting your EVUS application

The EVUS application can be completed online at any time. However, you should do it at least 72 hours before setting off to allow for any delays. To complete the application it is necessary to pay a fee using a credit or debit card.

All Chinese citizens, regardless of age, need to enroll with EVUS before traveling to the U.S. Traveling to the United States without an EVUS travel authorization could result in travelers being denied entry into the country.

An EVUS visa is valid for two years or until either the holder’s passport or B1/B2 visa expires. All three documents must match and EVUS cannot be transferred between passports or visas.
